Behind th Scenes by Kalah Tyler
Lights, camera, action! When most people think about a content shoot, they picture the equipment. The professional camera, the lighting, and maybe even the final polished video. But in reality, a successful content shoot is about much more than what is visible on set.
It is not just creative. It is strategic. At Get Fish Slapped, every piece of content is built with intention, from the message it delivers to the audience it is meant to reach.
Strategy Comes First
Before a camera is ever picked up, we take a step back and ask the important questions:
- Who is the target audience?
- What action do we want them to take?
- What type of content will actually move the needle?
Without this foundation, content quickly becomes noise instead of a tool. Every business is different, which means every strategy should be too. What works for a dental office will not necessarily work for a construction company. Their audiences, goals, and messaging are completely different. As strategists, it is our job to step into the shoes of the business and build content that speaks directly to the people they are trying to reach.
Content Planning
Once the strategy is clear, we move into planning. This is where ideas become actionable.
One of the most important tools in this phase is a shot list. A shot list is a guide that outlines the specific pieces of content we need to capture during the shoot. There is no one-size-fits-all template. Each list is customized based on the client, their goals, and how the content will be used.
A shot list may include:
- Video concepts and reel ideas
- Scripts or key talking points
- Examples to help guide direction and expectations
- Equipment and setup needs
This step ensures that nothing is left to chance. Instead of guessing on shoot day, we are executing a clear plan designed to maximize time and output. And most importantly, it keeps everyone aligned. The team, the client, and the talent all understand the vision before the cameras start rolling.
Shoot Day Execution
This is where the fun happens, but it is still highly structured. On shoot day, we are:
- Executing the shot list to ensure every planned asset is captured
- Directing talent so they feel confident, natural, and on-brand
- Capturing multiple variations to give flexibility in editing and usage
- Observing details like lighting, framing, and background distractions
- Adjusting in real time to get the strongest possible content
While we come prepared, we are always looking for opportunities to capture authentic moments that were not planned but add value. By the end of the shoot, we are not just walking away with random clips and photos. We are building a library of purposeful content that can be used across multiple platforms.
Bringing It All Together
A successful content shoot is not just about showing up with a camera. It is about thoughtful strategy, planning, and purposeful execution at every stage of the process. Every decision, from the messaging to the final shot, is made with a clear goal in mind.
At Get Fish Slapped, we do more than create content. We build structured, strategic systems that help businesses show up consistently, connect with the right audience, and turn attention into action. Because at the end of the day, content should not just look good. It should work.
